Unicorns In The Heights

On May 25th, The Fuentidueña Chapel in The Cloisters will host Magic Tree House series author Mary Pope Osborne as she reads from her book Blizzard of the Blue Moon, which features The Cloisters' famed unicorn. 

There will be two readings: 11:30 to 12:15 and 2:00 to 2:45.  This event is free with Museum Admission (suggested donation).  Be aware that seating is limited

EVENT: Writing and the Digital Revolution

An excellent program about writing and digital publications will be offered next week at PS/IS 187, proving that our neighborhood is indeed a cultural hotbed.

"WRITING AND THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION" will take place on Wednesday, May 29 from 6-8PM at the PS/IS 187 Auditorium located at 349 Cabrini Boulevard.

How is the work of writing and publishing changing in a world of blogs, ebooks, tablets, and smartphones? Join us for a discussion and Q&A with several members of our writing and publishing community in the Heights.

This exciting event features a number of excellent guests and features a post-panel Q&A, followed by a brief reception with panelists.

June 1: Hike the Heights!

On Saturday, June 1st, you are invited to join 2,000+ neighbors for Hike the Heights! 

 

From the organizers:

This community event brings together residents of Northern Manhattan to explore the area's diverse parks and to share a (free!) communal meal.

 

There are guided hikes leaving from several locations in the morning (see attached) and a community celebration will begin at 11am in the Sunken Playground at Highbridge Park (167th and Edgecomb).

 

If you are unable to join a guided hike at one of the times noted on the flyer, feel free to walk the trail with your family and friends. Giraffe statues provided by Creative Arts Workshops for Kids will line the path.

 

Please join for the hikes, celebration, or both!

It's My Park Day

Each year, the City of New York Parks & Recreation Department helps to organize city-wide "It's My Park Day" events.  You can find the full list of events here.

This Sunday, you have the opportunity to make a difference in two of our neighborhood parks!  This is a great family activity too!

Hanukkah Happenings in the Heights

Hanukkah / Chanukah is upon us! Here's a quick round-up of neighborhood events for the Festival of Lights.

Breuer's Yeshiva PTA Annual Chanukah Boutique 

Sunday December 2nd

There are many vendors selling wares including all your Chanukah candle and oil needs, Judaica, jewelery, toys and games, giftware, cookbooks, clothing and much more! Support a local school while buying all your Chanukah needs.  Free Parking is available in the public school yard on 186th and Broadway.

 

From 1:00pm-3:00pm there will be a Chanukah Family Fun Day.  Come watch a menorah ice sculpting demonstration while sipping hot cocoa.  There will be moonwalks, bouncy houses, sports activities and Chanukah crafts for children.

The Annual FTJC Hannukah Party
Saturday December 8th @ 6:30PM

Food, fun, camaraderie and even some skillful challenges to the traditional twist of the dreidel. You can’t be crowned the Extreme Dreidel Grand Champion if you don’t come.

Price: $10/person, $20/family, plus at least one item donated towards our food drive to benefit JCC-WHI. Items must bear a kosher certification, and be unopened, unexpired, undented, and not junk food. The best items are tuna, peanut butter, canned fruit or vegetables, pasta, and small boxes of Parmalat milk.
 

The schedule for the evening is:

6:30 — Food and children’s activities (face painting, crafts, and games)
7:30 — Community candle lighting
8:00 — Kumzitz (singalong and storytelling) and 1st Annual Extreme Dreidel Competition

9:30 -- after-party at Buddha Beer Bar (4476 Broadway, at W 191 St). Try 8 different beers, one for each crazy night of Hanukkah! Additional cost is $12/person

Hudson Heights Holiday Tree Lighting

The Fort Washington Collegiate Church is lighting up the holiday season this weekend!

We're setting up a very big tree in the church yard and we're covering it with lights this week…Because it's that time of year again!

Our TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY will be held on Saturday December 1! We've got a fun party planned starting at 3:00 so children can come see Santa and get a picture taken with the jolly old elf. There will be fun kid's games and popcorn and various other goodies. Then at 5:30 we'll all gather around the tree outside with a hot cup of cocoa and sing some carols and LIGHT THE TREE!

Last year was a great success!  Join in the fun this weekend.

Volunteer Opportunities Over Thanksgiving Weekend

The Parks still need volunteers to help recover from Superstorm Sandy!  Here are a few ways you can help this weekend if you're in the city....

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 23rd
Fort Tryon Park
11 am to 2 pm
Our Cafe Lawn needs repair!
Come remove storm damage fences, rake out invasive species and prepare the lawn so we can enlarge it for the public's use this coming Spring.
Meet at the Heather Garden Entrance to Fort Tryon Park at Margaret Corbin Circle near the northern terminus of Fort Washington Avenue.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 24th
Inwood Hill Park
11 am to 2 pm
Our leaves and debris need composting and woodchipping.
Help us sort through the piles and take home some woodchips for your Street Tree.
Meet at Payson Park House on Dyckman Street near Payson Avenue.
We will hike into the park so be there no later then 11:15 for the chance to walk through "Forever Wild" sections of Inwood Hill Park.
If you must show up later, please meet us on the north end of Dyckman Fields(west end of Dyckman Street and walk north into the park 1/2 mile to our soccer fields).

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 25th
Inwood Hill Park
11 am to 2 pm
Our Scenic trail needs clearing from storm damage.
Meet at Inwood Hill Park House near Seaman Avenue and 207th Street(at the tennis courts)
We will hike into the park so be there no later then 11:15 am.

Commemoration of the 236th Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Washington

Sunday, November 18, 2012

12:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.

In commemoration of the 236th anniversary of the Revolutionary War's Battle of Fort Washington, members of the Brigade of the American Revolution will set up camp on Fort Tryon Park's Cafe Lawn. Visitors will travel back in time and see demonstrations of how the Continental Army functioned during America's War for Independence.
In addition, a blacksmith will demonstrate his craft, historian Barnet Schecter, author of The Battle for New York, will speak, and local historian James Renner will display historic photographs and maps. Bagpiper Jerry Dixon will also perform.

There will be arts and crafts for kids compliments of the Fort Tryon Park Trust and the Morris Jumel Mansion. Representatives from Dyckman Farmhouse Museum will exhibit photographs from archaeological digs of the area that took place during the early 20th century. Revolutionary War Heroine Margaret Corbin will be giving tours of the battle area.
Come and reconnect to Fort Tryon Park's revolutionary war history.

Enjoy an evening of conviviality, fine wine and live music with your friends and neighbors at the annual wine tasting benefit for the Fort Tryon Park Trust. Cosponsor Cabrini Wines will supply an elegant assortment of wines for the tasting and special discounts for orders placed through the event. You can sample over 20 wines from Cabrini Wines paired with delectable food from restaurants in Washington Heights and Inwood thanks to the Washington Heights Business Improvement District. Music by Annette A. Aguilar and the Stringbeans, a Latin Jazz ensemble that incorporates Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian rhythms along with other world music forms including Jazz, Folk and Classical Music.

All proceeds support Fort Tryon Park restoration, horticultural supplies, maintenance staff, free programs, special events, volunteer initiatives and improvements in the park.

Ticket sales in advance – $50 per person

Ticket sales at the door (if space permits) – $60 per person
You may pay in advance by check or credit card. Tickets will soon be available for purchase online. They will be available online through Tuesday, July 24, for $50.

After noon on Tuesday, July 24, tickets will only be available at the door. If space permits, tickets may purchased at the door for $60 each and must be paid by cash or check only. No credit cards please.

This is a tented event and will take place rain or shine.
No refunds will be available.

Access to the historic Linden Terrace is by staircase only so it is not wheelchair accessible.

The concert, at 3:30 THIS SUNDAY, April 29th, will be at the Holyrood Church, at the corner of Fort Washington Avenue and W. 179th Street, across from the George Washington Bridge. (A-train to 175th St or 1-train to 181st Street, or M4 bus).
