This blog post is directed towards Hudson Heights residents that are within ear-shot of the Henry Hudson Parkway. Perhaps motorcyclists are enjoying the last few warm days of the year, but the drag racing on the highway has been intense over the past few days. I recently reported the problem to 311 and the operator immediately transferred me to 911. Apparently drag racing, unlike a generic noise complaint, is a 911-worthy event.
The 34th Precinct's former commanding officer, Captain Jose Navarro, once acknowledged the problem at a precinct council meeting but lamented that the force has inadequate staff to control the racing. He also alleged that trying to catch the motorcyclists would present safety risks to officers.
I am dubious about both explanations. In the meantime, however, the only solution is for residents to keep calling 911.
